With over 20 years of experience counseling struggling youth, Ogino captures in these poems the emotions and reflections of her clients—and sometimes herself—stemming from their shared journeys. The individuals featured in these poems are alive today, despite enduring the profound darkness described within, where life itself seemed tenuous.

THE KOJIKI
The Kojiki, or “Records of Ancient Matters,” is the oldest literary work in Japan, dating back to the 8th century. It collects a variety of myths, folklore, oral histories, and historical or semi-historical accounts of Japan. This translation to English by Kiyosumi Munehiro, the head priest of Komayumine-jinja Shrine in Nagano Prefecture, leverages his long experience and vast knowledge as a Shinto priest.
